Mastering Effective Speaking Skills

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Session Breakdown (6 Hours)

  • Objective: Understand the core principles of effective speaking.
  1. Welcome and Icebreaker (15 minutes)
    • Introduce yourself and your expectations for the course.
    • Icebreaker activity: Two Truths and a Lie or Quickfire Questions
      (Purpose: Warm up the group and reduce anxiety about speaking).
  2. Lecture: Key Elements of Effective Speaking (30 minutes)
    • Clarity: The importance of clear pronunciation, pacing, and pauses.
    • Confidence: Overcoming nerves, posture, and positive body language.
    • Audience Engagement: Keeping the audience interested with eye contact, gestures, etc.
  3. Discussion & Group Activity (15 minutes)
    • Activity: Discuss in small groups: “What makes someone a good speaker?”
    • Share your group’s findings with the class.
  • Objective: Equip participants with techniques to combat nervousness.
  1. Lecture: Managing Speaking Anxiety (20 minutes)
    • Physical Techniques: Breathing exercises, relaxation techniques.
    • Mental Techniques: Reframing nervousness as excitement, positive self-talk.
  2. Activity: Group Breathing & Power Posing (15 minutes)
    • Practice deep breathing and power poses before speaking to reduce anxiety.
  3. Pair Activity: “Impromptu Speeches” (25 minutes)
    • In pairs, one person picks a random topic (e.g., “Describe your favorite food,” “How to improve public speaking”).
    • The other person must speak for 1 minute without preparation.
    • Afterward, provide constructive feedback on how the speaker managed nerves, body language, and clarity.
  • Objective: Learn how to structure a speech for clarity and impact.
  1. Lecture: Speech Structure (15 minutes)
    • Introduction: Hook, outline, and purpose.
    • Body: Logical flow of ideas, clear transitions.
    • Conclusion: Summarizing main points, call to action.
  2. Activity: “The Elevator Pitch” (20 minutes)
    • Participants will have 1 minute to present an idea, product, or concept.
    • Focus on using clear structure (Introduction, Body, Conclusion).
    • Peer feedback after each pitch.
  3. Group Discussion: “Why Structure Matters” (15 minutes)
    • Reflect on the importance of a well-organized speech.
    • Discuss how structure impacts listener comprehension.
  • Objective: Understand how voice modulation and body language impact speaking.
  1. Lecture: Non-Verbal Communication (20 minutes)
    • Voice: Pitch, tone, pace, volume, pauses.
    • Body Language: Eye contact, gestures, posture.
    • Micro-expressions: The subtle messages conveyed by your face.
  2. Activity: Voice and Tone Practice (15 minutes)
    • Participants will read a short passage aloud while varying tone, volume, and pace.
    • Group feedback on how different styles impacted the message.
  3. Activity: Power of Gestures (15 minutes)
    • In groups, participants will pick a random topic and deliver a 2-minute speech using appropriate gestures and body language.
    • Feedback: Was the body language effective? What could be improved?
  • Objective: Learn techniques to make speeches more persuasive and engaging.
  1. Lecture: The Art of Persuasion and Storytelling (20 minutes)
    • Persuasion Techniques: Ethos, Pathos, Logos (Credibility, Emotion, Logic).
    • Storytelling: How to use stories to create emotional connection.
  2. Activity: Crafting a Persuasive Speech (20 minutes)
    • Participants will craft a short persuasive speech on a given topic (e.g., “Why we should go paperless in the office”).
    • Focus on integrating logic, emotion, and credibility.
  3. Activity: “Tell Your Story” (20 minutes)
    • Participants will share a personal story with the group, using persuasive techniques and engaging storytelling.
    • Group feedback on how the story resonated with the audience.
  • Objective: Provide participants with the opportunity to practice their speaking skills in front of the group.
  1. Activity: Final Presentations (40 minutes)
    • Participants will deliver a 3-minute speech on any topic of their choice, incorporating what they’ve learned about structure, persuasion, body language, and voice.
    • Audience gives constructive feedback on delivery.
  2. Group Discussion and Closing (20 minutes)
    • Review key takeaways from the course.
    • Discuss how participants can continue to practice and improve their speaking skills.
    • Provide final feedback on the course.

Ms. Kishwer Nazli

Ms. Kishwer Nazli, a Ph.D. scholar in Applied Linguistics, is a Senior Lecturer at IoBM with over a decade of teaching experience. She holds degrees in Geography, English Literature, and Linguistics. A teacher trainer, career counselor, and social activist, she conducts workshops and webinars internationally. Her research focuses on Critical Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics, and Gender Studies. Kishwer hosts a radio show Zuban-e-Ishq and runs a YouTube channel Linguistic Milange, promoting language learning and professional development in communication.
